Tantalum is often chosen due to a superior corrosion property. Properties like

• wear resistance
• electrical conductivity
• strength

may however be limited and an issue to improvement.

Improved resistance against wear

Improved electrical conductivity

Tantalums high resistance against chemical attack, is due to formation of a passive tantalum oxide layer on the surface of the metal. When exposed to oxidising conditions (oxidising media or electrical current) the oxide layer may growth resulting in a vanishing conductivity of the metal surface.

Thickening of the oxide layer can be avoided by applying suitable metal or ceramic layers to the tantalum surface. Tantalum Technologies offers procedures suitable for treatment of solid tantalum parts or Tantalum Technologies coated parts. Contact us with your specific request.

Improved strength

Solid tantalum is characterised by a limited strength from nature. Cold worked parts (e.g. wire) may offer better properties, but limited strength will always be an issue for parts machined from solid tantalum. Tantalum Technologies range of engineered tantalum products is based on composite technology. High strength tantalum parts can be achieved (even in complex geometries) by choosing this technology. Tantalum Technologies coating of customer’s substrates is another way to increase strength. With very few exceptions, Tantalum Technologies Coating will not cause decrease in strength of the components to be coated.
