Medical Device Technology
Tantalum Technologies has for many years been involved in development and of
tantalum
devices for medical use. In addition, Tantalum
Technologies offer job-shop
coating for medical device manufacturers.
As a partner,
or subcontractor, Tantalum Technologies may offer tantalum based solutions for a
number of applications including:
Tantalum Technologies

Improved Biocompatibility
The
biocompatibility of Tantalum is well proven during the last 50
years of clinical use.
A Tantalum Technologies Tantalum surface
may result in a faster ingrowth/adoption of an implant together
with less chance of rejection. Tantalum Technologies Coating is suitable for
treatment of a number of materials like, CoCrMo alloy, stainless
steel, carbon, titanium or titanium alloy and other materials.
In
combination with CoCrMo alloy Tantalum Technologies coating can further be of
use as semi-coated (partly coated) solution, since Tantalum
Technologies
Tantalum/CoCrMo combinations is safe in the human body.
Tantalum Technologies
Coating may improve implants used in a number of applications
where high tissue compatibility is an issue, like joint implants,
fasteners, spinal implants, dental implants and other devices.

X-ray marking
With
a high density of 16.6 g/cm3 (1440 lbm/ft3) tantalum is an optimal
choice for X-ray marking. Tantalum Technologies Coating is suitable for X-ray
marking of Stainless Steel, Titanium and Alloy, Nitinol, Carbon, Ceramics
and other materials, and may by applied for a number of implants
like e.g. stents and spinal implants.
By
optimising the tantalum layer thickness X-ray properties of the
tantalum can be controlled to be nearly transparent,
semi-transparent or opaque. A non-opaque approach is suitable where tantalum acts as a
marker, but X-ray diagnostic is used for
clinical evaluation of e.g. bone formation.

Improved fatigue strength
Applied
to materials like stainless steel and CoCrMo Alloy, tantalum has
shown to increase the fatigue strength by up to 60%. For implants
exposed for relative high mechanical load (e.g. hip joint implants)
a Tantalum Technologies Coating may improve lifetime and reduce failure rate. In
addition, Tantalum Technologies Coating will often improve the biocompatibility
of the implants. More

Cost optimised production for limited profit markets
Due to the
pinhole free nature, Tantalum Technologies Tantalum Coating is an obvious way to
improve the biocompatibility of metallic materials with low
chemical performance. When using Tantalum Technologies coating, implants can be
designed from a variety of construction materials, chosen from
production related issues like pricing, workability etc.
As
a result, Tantalum Technologies Coating is a way for making cost optimised
production of medical devices and offers a way to introduce new
high performance concepts into limited profit markets.
